June at the Fitness Centre: Building Strength and Confidence While Reducing Stress

Our first month of operation at the fitness centre has been a success. It has been incredible seeing members reconnect with their routines and bring such positive energy into the facility each day. I have especially enjoyed seeing familiar faces taking part in our group classes daily. This month we focus on new challenges while continuing to better ourselves.

Canadian Men’s Health Month

June is recognized as Canadian Men’s Health Month, highlighting the importance of both physical and mental well-being. Statistics Canada and the Canadian Mental Health association state that nearly 4,000 Canadians die by suicide each year with approximately 75% being men. Additionally, 2 in 3 Canadian men have never accessed mental health services even though 64% report moderate to high stress levels. These numbers are even higher amongst veterans and Indigenous Peoples.

It’s normal for men struggle in silence and isolate themselves rather than reaching out for support, but this month is an opportunity to help change the narrative. Check in with the people around you, especially if you notice unusual behaviour.

World Environment Day – June 5

World Environment Day reminds us that healthy environments help support healthy lifestyles. An idea for this environment day is replacing your typical indoor activities with some that you can replicate outdoors, weather permitting. If you’re not planning on doing activity, soaking up some vitamin D and chasing the fresh air can help elevate your mood. Choosing an outdoor workout can also add difficulty to your session when wind resistance and terrain variation come into play.

National Health and Fitness Day – June 7

National Health and Fitness Day encourages Canadians to make physical activity a part of everyday life. We cherish participation over perfection and strongly believe that every action contributes to better long-term health. We should remind ourselves that progress looks different for everyone and what works for someone else might not work for you.

The Relationship Between Stress & Sweat

Stress and cortisol are directly linked, and we’ve all heard the usual advice before: exercise regularly, sleep more, and eat well to keep your brain stocked with those feel-good chemicals. Unfortunately, research suggests that stress doesn’t disappear after a lift that leaves you barely capable of walking.

Exercise intensity and recovery balance may play a bigger role in cortisol regulation than most realize. High intensity bouts performed for an extended duration can temporarily raise cortisol as part of the body’s natural stress response. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s how the body adapts and gets stronger. But when intense training stacks up without enough recovery, it can contribute to feeling run down rather than refreshed.

On the other hand, mind-body exercise like yoga, mobility work, and lower-intensity movements have been consistently associated with stress reduction and improved nervous system regulation. Sometimes the best thing for your body isn’t another all-out bout, it’s giving your system the chance to recover and reset. This is something worth considering when planning your training routine: progress doesn’t just come from how hard you work, but from how well you recover too.

Beat the Trainer + Technogym Treadmill Challenge

Our June beat the trainer challenge is longest time skipping rope without stopping or tripping. This challenge will be accompanied by another program built directly into the treadmills: fastest 5 km run for time.

The treadmill doesn’t get enough credit in my opinion, who wouldn’t want indoor convenience and customizable training at their fingertips? The true beauty lies within as treadmills have some give, allowing them to flex underneath you. This ultimately means they are less impactful and nicer to your knees, ankles, and hips. We dedicate this month to treadmill as the ultimate training tool, no Strava allowed. Participants can join the facility challenge directly through the Technogym app and track their best 5km performance throughout the month. Whether you’re an experienced runner or simply looking for a new challenge, this is a great opportunity to push yourself, stay accountable, and bring some friendly competition into your training.

The participant with the fastest recorded 5km run time by the end of the month will take the top spot. If you have not already created your Technogym profile, now is the perfect time to get connected and start participating.

June Wrap Up

As we move through June the goal is simple: show up consistently and make small choices that result in positive change. Every action adds up toward a stronger and more balanced routine. Use challenges stay engaged with the space and do not be afraid to step away from the norm.
