May Mental Wellness: Reset and Recharge at National Bank Centre

We’re thrilled to celebrate our Grand Opening on May 4th. With clear forecasts, longer days and plenty of sunshine, there’s no better time to make the most of everything your new workplace fitness centre has to offer. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in supporting your health and well-being right here in your workplace. Whether you’re returning to fitness or trying something new, we’re here to help you get started.

Important Dates + Health Awareness in May

  • Mother's Day (Second Sunday of May)

A great reminder to celebrate and support hardworking mothers. Take a walk or share a workout, there's always an opportunity to connect through health and wellness.

  • Victoria Day (Third Monday of May)

The perfect time to stay active over the long weekend and carry your routine outside.

May is a key month in Canada’s health promotion calendar, highlighting several important areas of well-being:

  • Mental Health Awareness (including Mental Health Week in early May)

  • Sun Safety & Skin Cancer Awareness

  • Physical Activity Promotion

  • Heart Health and Stroke Awareness

  • Workplace Wellness Initiatives

As we move into sunnier days, it’s especially important to keep an eye on your skin. If you notice any new or changing moles, spots, or irregularities, consider having them checked. Early detection is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious skin issues.

Prioritizing Mental Wellness

It’s common to hear people describe the gym as an escape, a place to disconnect from the stress they leave behind when entering through the front door. While movement is a powerful tool for managing stress, sharpening focus, and resetting your mindset throughout the workday, we see it a little differently.

Rather than disconnecting, we encourage you to use your time here to be present, intentional, and engaged. Whether you are pushing through a workout, focusing on your breath, or simply shifting gears between meetings, this space is here to help you channel your energy with purpose.

Visio: Supporting Your Mental Wellness

Consider the Visio if you’re looking to manage stress, improve focus, or tie a calm moment into a hectic schedule. It offers guided meditation sessions designed to meet you where you’re at. Whether you’re brand new to meditation or already have experience, these sessions can help you develop greater awareness, regulate your breathing, and approach your workday with a clear mindset.

You can connect with the Visio in our studio space to get started. These sessions are designed to be easy to access and practical for a workplace environment, making it easier to incorporate mental wellness into your routine.

Please reach out to NBC Wellness if you are interested in having a deeper reset through a sound bath. Sound baths use calming frequencies and vibrations to help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and support recovery. This can be a great complement to your training, especially during high-stress periods or after intense workouts. We’re always looking to bring in services that support both your physical and mental well-being.

Get Involved: Beat the Trainer Challenge

We’re bringing some fun and friendly competition into the facility this month with our “Beat the Trainer” Challenge.

May Challenge: Longest Plank Hold

Think you can outlast our trainers? Stop by the fitness centre to give it a try. It’s a great way to test your core strength, engage with the community, and maybe even earn some bragging rights.

Why the Plank Matters

The plank might look simple, but it’s one of the most effective movements for building a strong, functional body.

Builds true core strength

The plank targets your entire core, not just your abs. It strengthens the deeper stabilizing muscles that support your spine and improve overall control.

Supports better posture

A strong core helps you sit, stand, and move with better alignment. This is especially important if you spend long hours at a desk.

Reduces risk of injury

By strengthening the muscles around your spine and hips, planks help protect your lower back and improve how your body handles everyday movement.

Improves performance in other exercises

Whether you’re lifting weights, running, or participating in one of our group classes, a stronger core translates into better balance, stability, and power.

Engages the full body

A proper plank isn’t just abs, it involves your shoulders, glutes, legs, and even your grip. It teaches your body to work as one connected unit.

Accessible, but challenging

Anyone can try a plank, but holding it with proper form is where the challenge comes in. It’s a great benchmark to track progress over time.

Builds mental toughness

Holding a plank is as much mental as it is physical. It teaches focus, control, and how to stay composed under tension
